Welcome to the Upper Turtle Lake District Website!  The purpose of the Upper Turtle Lake District is to preserve, protect, and enhance Upper Turtle Lake and its surroundings for today and future generations.  â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹

A lake resident reported a blue-green algae bloom at his shoreline on Upper Turtle Lake on Tuesday morning (08/26/25), which the DNR has verified from photographs. The bloom moved elsewhere when wind direction changed later that day. With low wind speeds forecast for the upcoming weekend it is possible that you will see floating scums of blue-green algae form on the lake, especially during overnight to early morning periods without wind, and at the downwind shore of the lake.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has fact sheets on Staying Safe and Healthy in Wisconsin's Lakes, Blue-green Algae and Dog Safety, and Safe Fishing Practices & Fish Consumption. These fact sheets show you the blue-green algae conditions to watch out for and to avoid. If you have very young children or dogs who will be swimming in the water, it’s safer to keep them out when floating areas of blue-green algae are present, and definitely stay out when conditions resemble those in the fact sheet photos.

The best thing you can do is to learn what blue-green algae look like and assess water conditions for yourself before swimming.
